10 Times Celebrities Lost It On Paparazzi
As a society, Americans tend to idolize celebrities and give them, whether deserved or not, God-like personas. We put them under a microscope, watching and often scrutinizing their every move.
Some people argue that stars shouldn’t complain about constantly being in the public eye. After all, they knew what they were getting into when they decided to pursue singing, acting or modeling, right? Never mind the fact that they may just be passionate (and often really talented) and their jobs and the fame was just a result.
When celebrities complain about never having privacy, there are plenty of people who rolls their eyes and say things like, “This is what they signed up for.”
But the truth is, unless you have been in their shoes, and know what it is like to have your personal, naked pictures leaked across the internet, or not be able to go grocery shopping in sweat pants without your makeup-less face being splashed across tabloid covers, or worry about your safety as you try to drive away from a restaurant and are bombarded by masses of people trying to peek inside your car and continuous lights flashing in your face—you really aren’t in any position to pass judgment.
Keep in mind that even the death of Princess Diana is attributed to paparazzi aggression. Also, consider the fact that it’s not always just cameras clicking and flashing away that irritate these stars, but the vulgar and insulting things shouted at them by photographers hoping to get a reaction out of them. Some of which have been successful (see below).
There have been plenty of stars who, instead of simply sitting back and letting the attention consume them or make them miserable, have actually taken matters into their own hands.
Justin Bieber once told a paparazzo, “I’ll f**king beat the f**k out of you.”
The incident happened in London as Bieber was trying to get in the car to leave and, after having a photographer insult him, The Biebs decided to get physical.
His bodyguard stopped it from escalating. You can watch the video clip here.
In 2011, while leaving the gym, Miley Cyrus was fed up with a photographer trying to video record her. So she began hitting him and knocking the camera away.
The singer also took to Twitter to not too long ago to say, “Highly considering moving back to Nashville. I can’t stand these D Bag paparazzi anymore.”
Chris Martin was once arrested for slashing the tires and smashing the windshield of a paparazzo’s car. Fortunately for him, the charges were eventually dropped.
While traveling through LAX with Katy Perry years ago, Russell Brand was arrested and had a $20,000 pound bail posted for attacked a paparazzo who, apparently, tried to snap pictures up Katy’s dress.
That wasn’t the only run in he had, either. In 2012, Brand took the phone of a photographer and threw it. Unfortunately for him, it went crashing into the window of a law office.
While dating in the early 2000s, Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake got a reputation for their hatred of paparazzi. On one occurrence, Diaz was actually photographed taking the camera of a photographer and trying to walk away with it.
Kanye West and his manager were both arrested for attacking a paparazzi and smashing his camera at LA International Airport in 2008—and the entire thing was caught on video. Don’t worry, his only punishment was community service.
What would this list be without reminding you of that time, already forever embedded in all of our minds, when Britney Spears went BONKERS on a paparazzi, umbrella in tow, hair nowhere to be found.
Woody Harrelson became so frustrated with one paparazzo in 2006 that he actually put his hands around his neck and broke his camera. The man did press charges, but they didn’t stick. Shocker.
Sean Penn is well-known for his outrage toward paparazzi. But the worst of attacks, not just for him but probably from all celebrities throughout history, happened back in 1986 while he was staying at a hotel in China.
When he returned to his room after shooting, a photographer was there waiting for him.
What did he do? He held the man by his ankles over the balcony of his room… which was on the 9th floor. Yes, he was arrested, though he was never convicted of the “attempted murder” charge.
The most recent paparazzi revenge came from Cara Delevingne, who, after having a photographer try to snap an up-the-skirt pic, attacked the parapazzi with water guns the following night. But it is not the first time Delevingne has lashed out. While traveling through an airport she also yelled at some photogs for not leaving her alone.
