15 Celebrities Who Ditched Their Wives For Younger Women
Some men treat their wives like cars: after a few years (or in some cases, a decade of two), they like to trade up for a newer model. That adage proves itself especially true in Hollywood, where celebs have no shortage of options for new loves. Here are some of the worst offenders.
Johnny Depp was technically not married to Vanessa Paradis, but the couple had been together for 14 years and had two kids (daughter Lily Rose and son Jack), so he’s earned his spot on this list. The actor and the French chanteuse seemed happy as clams, together forever. Then Depp met Amber Heard on the set of The Rum Diary (2011), and the rest was pretty much history: he and Paradis, then-40, split in June 2012. Soon, he was spotted traipsing around the globe with his newer, younger (26), blonder bombshell, with whom he later tied the knot in February 2015.
Rock ‘n’ roll icon Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones met his wife, Jo, in 1977 and married her in 1985. Everything was pretty peachy for the hard-partying couple until 2009. What happened in then? Wood met 18-year-old cocktail waitress Ekaterina Ivanova, and wasn’t at all discreet about his dalliances with her—he even introduced her to his own wife! In Jo Wood’s autobiography, she claims Ronnie and Ivanova drunkenly arrived at Ronnie and Jo’s home in the wee hours of the morning. Jo claims that Ivanova, still wasted, tried using her gas stove to light her cigarette when her hair caught fire. Jo used a damp washrag to put it out, a move she admitted to The Daily Mail that she may regret. The incident ended with Ronnie telling Jo, “Isn’t she funny? She reminds me of you when you were young.” Uh, ouch.
Frasier Crane would never! Kelsey Grammer married wife Camille Grammer in August 1997, and the couple had two sons together. In July 2010, Camille, then 43, abruptly filed for divorce from Kelsey, citing the ever-reliable “irreconcilable differences.” As it turns out, one of those “differences” was the fact that Kelsey got another woman pregnant. He announced his shotgun engagement to then-29-year-old British flight attendant Kayte Walsh before the ink dried on Camille’s filing. Kelsey married Walsh in February 2011, a mere two weeks after he finalized his divorce from Camille.
Ryan Phillippe was one of the prettiest pin-up boys of the late 1990s. He and Reese Witherspoon tied the knot in a shotgun wedding in 1999 and became parents of daughter Ava and son Deacon together. The pair were considered a golden (or at least golden-haired) couple…until 2007. That’s when Phillippe met Australian actress Abbie Cornish on the set of Stop Loss (2007). Soon, Witherspoon filed for divorce, and Phillippe stepped out with Cornish, who’s six years younger than his ex.
It’s unclear why anyone would think a marriage to Marilyn Manson makes sense, not even Manson himself. Still, Dita Von Teese wed the rocker when she was 33 to his 37…and less than a year later, their romance kicked the bucket. Though Von Teese never mentioned her by name, she told The Daily Telegraph, “I wasn’t supportive about his partying or his relationship with another girl and as much as I loved him, I wasn’t going to be part of that.” That “other girl” was then-19-year-old Evan Rachel Wood, who would later star in Manson’s Lolita-inspired music video for “Heart-Shaped Glasses.”
Eddie Cibrian married former model Brandi Glanville in 2001. The couple have two sons together, Mason and Jake. In 2009, Cibrian, then 36, co-starred with LeAnn Rimes, then 27, in the Lifetime movie Northern Lights, and they began an affair…despite both of them being married at the time. He and Glanville, 36 at the time, divorced in 2009, as did Rimes and then-husband Dean Sheremet. Cibrian’s divorce was finalized in 2010, and he and Rimes tied the knot in 2011.
Aw, come on, Mr. Bean. In 2013, British comedian and actor Rowan Atkinson divorced his wife of 23 years, Sunetra Sastry, who was 56. He very quickly moved on to Louise Ford, a 31-year-old actress. Atkinson and Ford are still going strong today.
Mel Gibson’s 2009 breakup from wife Robyn, then 53, was expensive: the couple was together for nearly 30 years and had no prenuptial agreement, costing the actor close to half of his estimated $850 million fortune. The pair split when Gibson began dating (and impregnating) Oksana Grigorieva, then 39. Here’s hoping it was worth it for him, because his relationship with Grigorieva ended beyond acrimoniously in a bitter custody battle over their daughter, Lucia. Fun fact: in a perhaps karmic move, Grigorieva and Gibson had split before his divorce from Robyn was even finalized.
Director Robert Rodriguez was married to producer Elizabeth Avellán from 1990 to 2006. In 2006, when Avellán was 49, Rodriguez filmed Grindhouse (2007) with muse Rose McGowan, then 33. McGowan would later become his girlfriend and inspire a remake of Barbarella that never happened. McGowan and Rodriguez split in 2009. Interestingly, Rodriguez and Avellán’s professional relationship continued after their divorce, with his ex producing many of his films…even Grindhouse.
Tom Cruise married Mimi Rogers in 1987 when he was still a rising star. In 1989, he was a 27-year-old megastar married to a 33-year-old middling actress in Rogers. Then he met Nicole Kidman, 22 at the time, on the set of Days of Thunder (1990). Everyone knows what happened next…especially the Church of Scientology.
11. Jason Aldean
Jason Aldean cheated on his wife of 11-years, 33-year-old Jessica Ussery, with 24-year-old Brittany Kerr. Although the 35-year-old country singer initially apologized for his behavior, he eventually left his wife for the American Idol alum and the two are now married.
12. Brad Pitt
Forty-two-year-old Brad Pitt left 35-year-old Jennifer Aniston for a 29-year-old Angelina Jolie. Rumor has it that Jennifer wasn’t crazy about the idea of having kids, which is one of the reasons he decided to go off with Angelina. Together, they now have six kids, three of which are adopted.
13. Eddie Cibrian
It is well know that Eddie Cibrian left his 36-year-old wife Brandi Glanville for 26-year-old LeAnn Rimes. Since their breakup, Brandi has sparred with LeAnn and Eddie semi-regularly and has had to endure the couple’s endless PDA.
14. Robin Williams
A 35-year-old Robin Williams left his 36-year-old wife Valerie Velardi for his secretary-assistant Marsha Garces, who was in her late 20s at the time. Before she was Robin secretary-assistant, she was a nanny to his and Valerie’s son, Zachary. This didn’t sit well with Valerie, but Robin couldn’t help himself. According to him, Marsha was “the one who makes [his] heart sing.”
15. Billy Crudup
Billy Crudup and Mary Louise Parker were never married, but they dated for several years before he left the 39-year-old actress, who was seven months pregnant with his son for his 24-year-old co-star, Claire Danes. Mary Louise has never really commented on what happened back in 2003; however, Claire has. According to her, she was in love with 35-year-old actor at the time and needed to explore that.
